On April 14, 1950 at 8:47 PM, an enormous star trailed slowly across the night sky. Passing north-east toward ancient mount Arunachala in Tiruvannamalai, India, it disappeared from sight. People saw it, knew what it portended and fell into a spontaneous outburst of grief. The great sage Bhagavan Sri Ramana, popularly called Ramana Maharshi, had attained Maha Nirvana (Eternal Liberation).
Ramana Maharshi, one of the greatest Saints of the 20th century who preached pure Advaita in 'thundering silence' and was heard with remarkable clarity. Thousands flock to Ramanasramam to meditate in silence in rooms that resonate with his presence and the tremendous compassion that he exuded.
"Bhagavan showed his compassion and accessible to devotees and visitors all the 24-hours. There were never any fixed darshan (to see or to get a glimpse of a deity or holy person) hours in all the 50-odd years. He hardly ever slept for more than a couple of hours a night.
His life revolved around the message of compassion. Tall, gentle and gracious, he always related to all at their own level. He would patiently talk to children and painstakingly bind their torn books. He loved animals and seemed to understand them perfectly. Leopards, peacocks, cows, dogs, monkeys, snakes, squirrels and birds would all gravitate towards him. Gently, he would admonish a leopard to back off, sort out problems between quarrelling monkeys and remain unperturbed while a snake slithered over his legs.
His belief that the Source or Consciousness exists in every life form made him respect plant life. He called trees "standing men" and men "walking trees". Once a female devotee who had vowed to do puja (the act of worship) with a large quantity of tulsi or basil leaves could not obtain the required amount. She mentioned this to Bhagavan, who replied: "If you cannot get the leaves, why not pinch yourself and do the puja? If it pains you to pinch your own body, is it not painful for the tree when you pluck the leaves?"
Maharshi was born on December 30, 1879 in Tiruchuzhi, a small town 38 miles from Madurai, India, where he later attained enlightenment at the age of 16. The second of four children, when he was 12 his father passed away and the children went to live with a paternal uncle in Madurai. At school, football, wrestling and swimming appealed to him, not studies. But he had an amazingly retentive memory.
DYING TO THE WORLD
Maharshi's Enlightenment is best described in his own words: "It was quite sudden. I was sitting alone in a room on the first floor of my uncle's house. I was seldom sick, and on that day there was nothing wrong with my health, but a sudden fear of death overtook me. There was nothing to account for it, but I just felt 'I am going to die' and began thinking what to do about it. It did not occur to me to consult a doctor, my elders or friends.
"The shock of the fear of death drove my mind inwards and I said to myself mentally: 'Now that death has come, what does it mean? What is it that is dying? This body dies.' I dramatized death. I lay with my limbs stretched out stiff as though rigor mortis had set in. I held my breath and kept my lips tightly closed so that no sound could escape. 'Well then,' I said to myself, 'this body is dead. It will be carried stiff to the burning ground, burnt and reduced to ashes. But with the death of this body am I dead? Is the body I? It is silent and inert but I feel the full force of my personality and even the voice of the 'I' within me, apart from it. So I am the Spirit transcending the body. The body dies but the Spirit that transcends it cannot be touched by death. That means, I am the deathless Spirit.' All this was not dull thought; it flashed through me vividly as living truth, which I perceived directly, almost without thought-process. 'I' was something very real, the only real thing about my present state, and all the conscious activity connected with my body was centered on the 'I'. From that moment onwards the 'I' or Self focused attention on itself by a powerful fascination. Fear of death had vanished once and for all. Absorption in the Self continued unbroken from then on. Whether the body was engaged in talking, reading or anything else, I was still centered on the 'I'."
CONSCIOUSNESS ALONE
Two months later, he left home for Tiruvannamalai with five rupees in his pocket. Maharishi had heard about Arunachala and his body burned until he reached this hill where he remained for over 50 years until his physical death.
Although the central focus for decades in an ashram visited by thousands of seekers from all over the world, Maharishi never recognized anyone as his disciple. He insisted that Consciousness alone is the guru or teacher. Maharishi indicated that although the guru is within everyone as primal awareness, an illumined sage can push us 'inward'. He could do this with a glance; seated in silence, he would suddenly fix one with an intense gaze, and the person would become directly aware of his own nature, which is a vibrant current of primal awareness.
Many foreigners also visited Maharishi. One of the famous ones was Paul Brunton, a seeker who had met many masters. His book, A Search in Secret India, narrating his experience with Maharishi, brought more foreigners and Indians to Tiruvannamalai.
Brunton describes his experience with Bhagavan: "Maharishi turned and looked into my face. I, in turn, gazed expectantly at him. I become aware of a mysterious change taking place with great rapidity in my heart and mind. The old motives, which have lured me on, begin to desert me. The urgent desires, which have sent my feet hither and thither, vanish with incredible swiftness. The dislikes, misunderstandings, coldness and selfishness, which have marked my dealings with many of my fellows, collapse into the abyss of nothingness. An untellable peace falls upon me and I know now that there is nothing further that I shall ask from life."
As conveyed by Papaji and Paul Brunton, Maharishi would speak less and so his teachings were transmitted in an unusual fashion. Very few verbal instructions were given, except to answer specific questions of devotees. He constantly emanated a silent force that stilled the minds of those attuned to it. In later years, he was willing to impart verbal teachings as the spiritual level of people varied. The silent teachings, however, were meant for those who were able to make good use of them.
His teaching is best exemplified not just in the way he lived, but especially in his death. In 1949 at the age of 70, a tumor was discovered below his left elbow. This was operated several times without anesthesia. Being malignant, the tumor grew at an amazing pace.
When devotees begged him to cure it with his yogic powers, Maharshi replied in the spirit of his teachings: "Who is there to have such a thought? Who is there to will this?" Through suffering great pain, he sought to alleviate the grief of devotees-not the easy way by removing suffering and postponing death, but fundamentally by making them realize that the body was not Maharshi. "They take this body for Bhagavan and attribute suffering to him. What a pity! They are despondent that Bhagavan is going to leave them and go away, but where would I go? I am here."
After his death, the body was interred with divine honors in the north wall of the temple at the ashram. A hall of silence has been erected over his samadhi where devotees sit in meditation as they did before the living Ramana.
As the late Arthur Osborne, a close devotee of Maharishi, said: "Even now, those who sit before the samadhi find the grace of Bhagavan as powerful and as sweet and subtle as during his body's lifetime. Some who lived there have remained. Some who went away, have returned. Many more will come. For according to his promise, he has not left us. He is here in our hearts. He is here at Arunachala."

Holy Rudraksha
Rudraksha
Rudraksha (Sanskrit: rudrākṣa) (Rudra-eyed) is the name of the dark berries of Elaeocarpus ganitrus, used to make prayer beads (Sanskrit: maalaa). The word is a Sanskrit compound consisting of the name Rudra and ākṣa (eye).
Botanical Name: Elaeocarpus Ganitrus Roxb.
Family : Tiliaceae, the Lime/Linden family.
Chemical Composition of Rudraksha Beads
The percentage compositions of the gaseous elements present in a Rudraksha was determined by C-H-N Analyzer and by Gas chromatography.
Rudraksha beads contain 50.031 % carbon,
0.95% nitrogen,
17.897% hydrogen &
30.53% oxygen.
Rudraksha Tree
The Rudraksha tree inhabits areas starting from Manila, Philippines and passing through Myanmar to entire North-East India, Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan. Rudraksha is a large, evergreen broad-leaved tree found in tropical and sub-tropical areas at the altitudes ranging from seacoast to 2,000 meters above the sea level. The tree is a perennial i.e. grows throughout the year and is about 50-200 feet high.
The main trunk of the Rudraksha tree is cylindrical with a grayish white and rough textured bark. In Nature, leafy crown of a Rudraksha tree takes a pyramidal shape. The leaves of Rudraksha tree are shinning green on the upper side with a dull leathery dorsal side. Rudraksha flowers are white with fringed petals and they appear in April-May. Rudraksha fruits appear in June and ripen by August-October. They are globular in shape with a fleshy exterior. The bead present inside is hard and tubercled.
The Rudraksha is a large evergreen broad-leaved tree that grows in the area from the Gangetic Plain to the foothills of the Himalayas. Rudraksha trees are also found in middle areas of Nepal. Rudraksha seeds are covered by an outer shell of blue color when fully ripe, and for this reason are also known as blueberry beads. The blue colour is derived not from pigment but is structural.
Cultivation:
Rudraksha farming is a difficult process due to the slow sprouting from the beads. Depending on the humidity of the soil, it usually takes 1-2 years for a tree to sprout. Rudraksha is grown in subtropical climatic regions with temperature ranges of 25-30 degree centigrade. The tree starts giving fruit after 7 years A single Rudraksha tree bears beads in all different faces or mukhis at the same time. The higher mukhis or faces are very rare. Most common Rudraksha bead is the five faceted or panchmukhi. The environment and location of Rudraksha trees plays a major role in the bead formation and the type of bead formed. e.g: The Himalayan beads seem larger, heavier and more powerful due to the environment they grow in.
Rudraksha beads are the material from which sacred garlands (108 beads in number) are made. The term is used both for the berries themselves and as a term for the type of mālā made from them. In this sense, a rudraksha is a Saivite rosary, used for japa mala. Repetitive prayer (japa) is a common aid to worship in Hinduism, and Rudraksha mālā are worn by many Hindus. Rudraksha is also used for treatment of various diseases in traditional Indian medicine.
The berries show variation in the number of grooves on their surface, and are classified on the basis of the number of divisions that they have. A common type has five divisions, and these are considered to be symbolic of the five faces of Shiva.
The best way to find the authenticity of a rudraksha is to get it X-rayed and count the number of compartments inside. If they are equal to the number of lines outside the rudraksha is real. This rudraksha mala is made from fine, ripe and hard real rudraksha seeds that sinks in water.
Rudraksha seeds (beads) are used for spritual mala or rosary such as in Hindu and Buddishm. Rudraksha mala has been used by Hindus, Sikhs and Buddhists as rosary for thousands of years for meditation purposes to sanctify the mind, body and soul. The word Rudraksha is derived from Rudra (Shiva—the Hindu God of all living creatures) and aksha (eyes). So, Rudraksha is related to Shiva’s eyes.
It is a gift of Lord Shiva for the benefit of Mankind. He himself wears it all the time. The tears of Lord Shiva i.e. Rudraksha beads, have been worn by the Yogis of India and the Himalayas for the thousands of years for the Fearless Life on their Path to Enlightenment and Liberation.

The only thing is that the bead should be well defined and there should be no cracks and the bead is healthy and not eaten by insects etc. Rudraksha is recognized only by looking at the linings or mukhis on it. It is advised that the people should purchase Rudraksha only after observing the linings or mukhis. Lower mukhi Rudrakshas i.e. 2 to 7 mukhi are available in market without any faking. In the case of higher mukhis and rare mukhis i.e. One mukhi round or Gauri Shankar, some people artificially carve out lines on a natural bead of Betel nut or Berry to get the effect.
Some people think that Rudraksha, when poured in water, should sink and not float in the water or should rotate between two Copper Coins. These thinking are absolutely wrong because even a ripe or dry but genuine bead may float and a non-genuine bead may sink. People need to be aware about the ways in which a Rudraksha is faked and use simple procedures like observing the mukhi lines by Magnifying Glass, soaking in warm water to observe tampered mukhi lines if any etc. Therefore, the best way is to procure from reliable sources i.e. to purchase Rudrakhas from genuine & true suppliers.

Then leave the beads to dry for 2-3 hours and then apply some oil on the beads by using a brush. Sandal wood oil is best mixed with light Olive oil. Oiling may be repeated whenever the beads seems to be dry. Bead or Maalaa could be taken off while taking bath as regular soap could dehydrate the beads and clog the pores of the beads. Also Talcum powder clogs the pores of the beads. The wearer can take bath without removing them but should protect them from soap.
Scientific Research on Rudraksha
Ancient and contemporary Asian texts state extensively about the beneficial healing powers of Rudraksha bead. In recent times, the Rudraksha bead has gained significance again as a mode of healing and also as a fashion accessory. In recent years, scientific studies have been undertaken in India to determine the extent and mechanism of the healing powers of Rudraksha. One of the best known research papers was published by Dr. Subhas Rai of the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology, Banaras, India.
Dr. Rai's research confirmed that as scripted in the ancient scriptures, Rudraksha beads do possess powerful electromagnetic, paramagnetic and inductive properties. The healing powers of the Rudraksha bead are derived from such properties. Blood circulation and heart beats automatically induce a magnetic field around the body and particularly the heart region. Accordingly, a balancing force is exerted on the heart to regulate it if it starts beating above or below normal rates. This action helps to ensure ideal blood circulation in the body. Depending upon the polarity and intensity of the induced magnetic field, Rudraksha beads transmit subtle electrical and inductive impulses with opposing polarity and intensity. When Rudraksha beads are placed over the heart, they act to stabilize the heart beat. Thus, the stated beneficial effects of the Rudraksha bead have been proved scientifically as well.

Pull the bead one by one towards yourself with the thumb while calling/reciting/chanting “Om Hreem Shivaya” & crossing and pulling the beads by the tip of the thumb. After completing the japa(prayer) until the 108th bead (the bead just before the guru bead) turn around the mala by your thumb and start the japa again from the 108th bead and continue upto the 1st bead.
